Ningbo University (NBU), located on the east coast of Zhejiang Province, China, is a key university in the country's “Shuang Yi Liu” (“Double First-Class”) Initiative, enjoying the funding support from the provincial government of Zhejiang, the Ministry of Education and Ningbo Municipality, as well as the State Oceanic Administration.

NBU was set up in 1986 with the donations from Sir Yue-Kong Pao, the shipping magnate in Hong Kong, with the Chinese name “Ning Bo Da Xue” inscribed by Mr. Deng Xiaoping.

Looking back, the university, formed by the merger of three colleges, has made strides forward, and is on the way towards a research-oriented university with the comprehensive strength ranking among the top 100 in China.

With commitment to nurturing first-class talents and the philosophy of “delivering students the right to choose”, NBU has taken the lead in education and innovation among all the universities in China. It has educated more than 200,000 students so far, with alumni associations set up around the world. It has won a first prize and a second prize in National Teaching Achievement Award and joined the first ranks in mass entrepreneurship and innovation competitions among all universities in Chinese mainland. The university attaches great importance to discipline development. According to ESI, presently 5 disciplines in NBU have ranked among top 1% in the world. NBU channels great efforts to develop scientific innovation and has won three national awards in science and technology. Taking an active part in economic and social development, NBU works vigorously to help develop China into a power in marine technology. NBU greatly promotes international education under the Belt and Road Initiative, having enrolled the largest number of international students among all provincially-run universities in Zhejiang.
